Experience
Engineering Excellence Since 1952
J&CA specializes in the structural design of water and wastewater treatment plants and concrete tanks. They are among the best known and recognized national and world leaders in the design of these structures. J&CA has extensive experience in the structural design of all types and shapes of water and wastewater treatment and storage structures.
J&CA has provided consulting structural engineering services, exclusively, since Ib Falk Jorgensen founded the firm in 1952. As design professionals, these services include a wide variety of projects such as water and wastewater treatment plants, bridges and buildings. In the early 1960’s, however, J&CA began specializing in the structural design of circular and rectangular prestressed concrete tanks.
Steven R. Close joined Mr. Jorgensen in the firm in 1971 after expanding the capabilities of J&CA’s circular tank (Cylindrical shell) design computer program as a class project while still attending the University of Colorado. Tony Galterio joined the firm in 1997 and became a partner in 2004, a year before Mr. Jorgensen passed away.
The principals of J&CA continue to contribute literally countless hours to the American Concrete Institute, the American Water Works Association and other professional organizations working on various codes and standards for tanks. These documents describe the proper design and construction of prestressed and nonprestressed water and wastewater treatment structures and tanks. Few other firms or individuals come close to matching their dedication and wide-ranging experience with these types of structures. This type of involvement in professional committee work keeps J&CA at the forefront of the nation’s leaders in the design of concrete environment structures.
J&CA strives to understand how and why concrete cracks and leaks, or not, to the point these things adversely affect the performance of environmental structures. The principals learned are then applied to every J&CA designed water or wastewater treatment structure and tank they design, to maximize watertightness and long-term durability.
J&CA Has designed thousands of conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned water and wastewater treatment structures and tanks all across the United States and in several foreign countries over the last 58 years. They are ready, willing and able to bring this unprecedented dedication and experience to your project if selected to provide the structural design services.
The following list of prestressed concrete tank designs represents only a small fraction of the tanks structurally designed by Jorgensen & Close Associates, Inc. (J&CA) through the end of 2006.
193 - Prestressed concrete tanks designed by J&CA totaling 662 Million Gallons – all of which are giving satisfactory service.
27 - Conventionally reinforced concrete tanks of 250,000 gallon capacity or above designed by J&CA.
46 - Investigations and rehabilitations of distressed tanks originally designed by others.
32 - J&CA’s peer reviews and modifications to the design of tanks designed by others prior to construction.
Note: The above does not include literally hundreds of smaller tanks, used for potable water storage, clear wells, clarifiers, aeration basins, and filters. Nor does it include other conventionally reinforced water related structures such as spillways, dam gate structures, retaining walls, plazas and pedestrian and vehicular bridge abutments used in drainage ways designed by J&CA.
